For the 400 anniversary of the school Maryam Mortaz was asked to design the schools science garden with the budget raised by the school’s parent association. Maryam’s training at the Inchbald School of Garden Design and her PhD in science provided a perfect combination for the job.
She meticulously researched the concept for the science garden and after talking with the teachers and the pupils and came up with the science themed design which included medicinal and edible plants.
The design was created based around Mathematical ratio called Fibonacci spiral. The garden provided space to use an outdoor classroom to investigate biological concepts such as pollination and meteroligical research using equipment such as a weather station. It has proved a beautiful, stimulating space for art and poetry lessons. A gardening club has been formed for pupils to learn about growing vegetables.
